The Commissioner for Children:
Ms Helen D'Amato
Ms Helen D’Amato was appointed as Commissioner for Children on the 20th May 2010. She is the third to occupy this post following Ms. Sonia Camilleri, and most recently Ms. Carmen Zammit.
During a meeting with the Prime Minister of Malta upon her appointment, Mrs. D’Amato said that she would work on four pillars in her work – the promotion of children and young people’s rights, the protection against harm, the strengthening and provision of necessary services, and the participation of children and young people in all aspects of society.
Mrs. D’Amato also expressed her commitment towards working to ensure that children have the opportunity to grow up within a stable family, that more focus is given to fostering where necessary, and it is imperative to have adequate services to support children and young people with behavioural and emotional problems.
It was also necessary for the structure of the Family Court to be changed, in order to allow children to have child-friendly access to justice.
